Obviously, it would have been better if it was part of the original game, but unfortunately that’s not the video-gaming world we live in anymore. The three new missions offer very different experiences that compliment, or even improve, elements of the parent game. And while much of it is cynically produced and of notably lower quality than the main game, this first set of extras for Resident Evil 7 is very good. In recent years DLC has become a standard part of the video game landscape. Even the game admits that a lot of it is down to luck, but the remixed version of the Baker’s plantation you get to play through is a compelling backdrop to test yourself against. There’s even a bit of influence from Dark Souls, in that you can retain some of your items when killed by getting back to the place where you died and retrieving a statue. No doubt that means someone on YouTube has already managed to beat it with one arm tied behind their back, but normal mortals will find the one-shot kills and randomised item drops make things maddeningly difficult. You do unlock a higher difficulty once you beat the story, but if you really want to test yourself then Ethan Must Die is a near impossible challenge. Another criticism of the main game is that the normal difficulty is too easy. If even Night Terror seems too easy then you’ll want to try the new game mode. The atmosphere is great and the only real disappointment is the abrupt ending and lack of replay value. This all works really well and, much like one of the other video tapes in the main game, the puzzles are surprisingly clever and interesting.

Nightmare: Trapped in a basement full of unknown horrors. Although if it’s only a small change you might be able to bluff your way out by picking a suitable dialogue choice. This newly unearthed footage exposes further secrets from the dark past of the Baker family. She’ll also notice if anything has been moved, so once you hear her start coming back there’s a sudden panic to put everything back the way it was or risk being found out.
The great thing about Bedroom though is that Maugerite keeps coming back in to check on you, and if you make too much noise she’ll storm in and try to catch you out of bed.

There is a way to get it though and so the whole story mission becomes essentially an escape room puzzle, where you try to figure out how to get into the next room and work out the trick for unlocking the key. It’s easy enough to get out of the shackles you’re in but the door is locked and the only way to escape is by grabbing a key that lies tantalising out of reach through a hole in the wall.
Clancy has been caught by the Bakers and Maugerite has him locked up in a bedroom, where she’s trying to feed him her disgusting, and presumably mutation-causing, food.

The missions work in a similar way to the video tapes from the story campaign, in that they put you in control of someone other than main character Ethan. Although the two video tape missions are part of the overall story they’re accessed from the main menu and not from within the game.
